Statement from History

The faculty of the Department of History unanimously wish to express our profound opposition to the recent wave of staff layoffs at the university as well as our deep concern about rumors of still more yet to come. While acknowledging the seriousness of GW’s current economic predicament, we urge the administration to exhaust all other financial alternatives before pursuing any more layoffs. Above all, these include increasing the payout from our $1.78 billion endowment and tapping the recently opened $300 million line of credit to shepherd the university through its present short-term liquidity issues. As historians mindful of how management has traditionally sought to pit members of its laboring force against each other, we stand in solidarity with all our co-workers at GW and demand an end to the layoffs.
