Statement from Geography

The faculty of the Department of Geography unanimously wish to express our profound
opposition to the recent wave of staff layoffs at the university as well as our deep concern
about rumors of still more yet to come. We also oppose the modification of GW students’
financial aid allotments, during a time of hardship for many families. While acknowledging the
seriousness of GW’s current economic predicament, we urge the administration to exhaust all
other financial alternatives before pursuing any more layoffs. Above all, these include
increasing the payout from our $1.78 billion endowment, tapping into college reserves, and
using the recently opened $300 million line of credit to shepherd the university through its
present short-term liquidity issues. Along with our colleagues in the Departments of History,
American Studies, Sociology and WGSS, we stand in solidarity with all our co-workers and
students at GW and demand an end to the administration’s punitive policies that hurt the
mission of the University.
